China's film industry has recently celebrated significant box office successes, especially during the Spring Festival season. However, despite these achievements, the ongoing problem of movie piracy poses a threat to the industry's growth and the rights of content creators. In response, Chinese authorities have initiated a comprehensive crackdown on film piracy, resulting in considerable progress in protecting intellectual property rights.

Key Developments in the Anti-Piracy Campaign

  • Massive Removal of Infringing Content: According to China Daily, by February 20, authorities had eliminated nearly 2.3 million web links that infringed upon the copyrights of recent box office hits. Additionally, 4,116 online accounts were banned or restricted for repeated copyright violations. chinadailyhk.com

  • Detention of Suspected Pirates: Since the campaign's initiation in January, over 40 individuals have been detained on suspicion of unauthorised filming, pirated recordings, and illegal distribution of Spring Festival blockbusters.

  • Dismantling Piracy Networks: In Zhejiang province, police apprehended 11 suspects accused of establishing websites and apps to distribute pirated copies of films like "Ne Zha 2" and "Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force," amassing over 14 million yuan ($1.9 million) in illicit profits. In Anhui province, 10 suspects were detained following a similar case, with authorities seizing more than 12 million yuan in illegal gains.

Legal Framework and Penalties

Under China's Criminal Law, individuals found guilty of pirating films for profit can face prison sentences of up to three years and may also incur fines. If the illegal gains are significant or the offense is considered serious, the maximum sentence can be increased to seven years.
