On July 31, Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Minburi Metropolitan Police, carried out synchronised raids across 21 locations in Sa Kaeo, Rayong, Saraburi, Bangkok, and neighbouring provinces. The operation aimed to dismantle a complex network involved in online gambling sites and unauthorised Premier League broadcast piracy, resulting in estimated damages from copyright infringement exceeding 2.9 billion baht. The DSI reported that the total amount related to gambling activities exceeded 1,000 billion baht.
Lt. Col. Khem Chart Spark Hongmani, Director of the Technology and Information Crime Division at DSI, stated that the operation was triggered by specific intelligence that led to an investigation, warranting the issuance of search warrants. The targets, linked to the piracy of live Premier League, also included operations related to lottery and online betting platforms.
The investigation led to the Minburi District of Bangkok, where suspects operated about ten online gambling websites covertly from a corporate office setting. During the search, authorities also uncovered a marijuana sales operation behind the premises, prompting further investigations to determine the legality of its licensing.
Lt. Col. Khemchart elaborated that more than 100 'mule accounts,' both Thai and foreign, used for gambling activities were identified. These accounts are under scrutiny to ascertain their roles in potential money laundering activities and possible connections to government officials. According to DSI, each account could be implicated in various crimes, including up to 30,000 fraud cases, with stolen personal information possibly sold to call centre fraud syndicates and other scammers.
The illegal operations significantly impacted The Football Association Premier League Limited and its authorised licensee, True Visions Group Co., Ltd., with the DSI estimating financial losses at 2.9 billion baht. As a result, arrest warrants were issued for five Thai nationals. Some of them have reportedly fled to neighbouring countries. These individuals are also implicated in organising gambling activities. Two of them have now been arrested.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) is collaborating with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AML) to examine financial transactions related to the raided businesses.
The Connection Between Online Sports Piracy and Other Crimes
The recent operation conducted by the DSI demonstrates the strong connection between online sports piracy and other serious crimes. It is essential to understand that activities like unauthorised streaming of sports events do not occur in isolation. They are often part of a more extensive network of criminal activities.
Piracy and Fraud: Online piracy operations often involve large-scale fraud. This includes the sale of stolen personal data and the creation of 'mule accounts' for use in various fraud schemes. Victims of these schemes may experience identity theft, financial losses, and other personal security risks.
Money Laundering: Money laundering is a central component of online piracy networks. The substantial revenues generated from illegal streaming and gambling need to be 'cleaned,' which is often achieved through complex financial transactions that hide the origins of the money. This undermines economic stability and fuels further criminal activities.
Ties to Organised Crime: The scale and structure of these operations suggest deep ties to organised crime. Involvement in gambling, drugs, and other illegal activities shows how piracy networks diversify their criminal portfolios, broadening their reach and impact.
Impact on Legitimate Businesses: Businesses like The Football Association Premier League Limited and True Visions Group Co., Ltd. suffer enormous financial losses due to piracy, impacting the company and the economy. Legitimate businesses face unfair competition, reducing revenues and potential job losses.
In conclusion, tackling online sports piracy concerns more than protecting intellectual property. It's a vital step in disrupting many criminal activities that threaten economic and personal security. The recent raids underscore the importance of coordinated efforts to combat these multifaceted crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
